How Infrared temperature sensor works

Infrared is an Electromagnetic radiation with wavelength between 750nm to 1mm. Other part of electromagnetic radiation includes radio waves, micro waves, visible light, ultraviolet, x rays and Gamma rays.
The Infrared technology can be used to measure the temperature of the target. Every object with temperature above absolute zero emits electromagnetic radiation. Infrared radiation using optics is focused on to the sensor. Depending on the intensity of the radiation the sensor will give the output. The electrical signal is then used to get the temperature.
The important parameters to be considered while selecting an infrared temperature sensor are temperature range, target size, distance between target and sensor and moving target/stationary target. Based on this factors the manufacturer calibrates the sensor.

Advantages of Infrared temperature sensor
  • Since is it non contact, the infrared temperature sensor can be used to measure temperature where it is difficult to use contact temperature sensors for example measurement of the tyre temperature.
  • Since the infrared temperature sensor has no physical contact with the target there is no question of friction and wear. Hence operating life is more.
Disadvantages of Infrared temperature sensor
  • Not very accurate if target is moving
  • Could be affected by other infrared radiations
Applications of Infrared temperature sensor
  • Tyre temperature measurement
  • Brake temperature measurement
